About the Role

The School of Engineering and Materials Science is seeking to develop and strengthen its internationally-regarded biomedical engineering research activity as part of the School’s on-going investment in research excellence.

We currently seek applicants with research interests that are complementary to our existing strengths in the area of biomedical engineering, linking to the broad remit of mechanical engineering. These can include, but are not limited to: biomechanics, mechanobiology, biomaterials, in vitro models and predictive modelling, viewed from an experimental or computational angle.

About You

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant area, in addition to a proven track record of research achievement demonstrated through refereed journal publications. Applicants additionally require at a minimum outstanding potential for research income generation, with a proven track record expected for a role at senior lecturer level.

A commitment to the development of a high-quality student education is also essential, to develop and support our taught programmes in the biomedical and mechanical engineering areas, with increasing expectations of experience associated with appointment level.

About the School

This post is within the School of Engineering and Materials Science, a large School with 70-80 academics and a similar number of postdoctoral research staff. There are around 1000 undergraduate and taught postgraduate students and 220 PhD students, with additional core staff associated with our Joint Educational Institute and Joint Research Institute with Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in Xi’an China.

These are supported by an administrative and technical staff team of 45. The staff and student body are international in make-up.

We have a strong track record in bioengineering research with multidisciplinary collaborative links to Barts and The School of Medicine and Dentistry and the Royal London NHS Trust. With investment of over £35M in recent years, we house state-of-the-art experimental research facilities in the school include extensive cell and tissue culture laboratories, the Queen Mary+Emulate Organs-on-chips Centre, confocal/super resolution and electron microscopy facilities, mechanobiology labs, biomaterials manufacture and characterisation facilities and a clinical gait assessment lab, as well as access to high performance computing and full design and manufacture workshops.
