PhD candidate in Alkali activated mineral wool for 3D printing products and elements
The TU Delft School of Civil Engineering

Job Title:PhD candidate in Alkali activated mineral wool for 3D printing products and elements
Faculty: Faculty Civil Engineering
Working hour: 36-40 uur per week
Contract: 4 years
Salary: 2325 - 2972 euro per maand (volledige dagtaak)

Faculty Civil Engineering

The position is located within the department Materials, Mechanics, Management & Design (3MD), part of Faculty Civil Engineering & Geosciences. 3MD focuses on the design, mechanics, materials and management of civil infrastructures and buildings. A multi-scale research approach is followed, starting at micro-scale (materials), to meso-scale (structures) and to macro-scale (infrastructures/systems). The department governs the entire life cycle from develop, design, build, maintain, operate to demolish or reuse. The department has strong competences in modelling and design for both civil infrastructures as well as buildings.

Materials & Environment focuses on the development of new materials, self-sensing materials and manufactured materials (3D-printing), and on the behaviour of the more traditional cement-based materials and materials based on alternative binder systems with respect to hydration mechanisms, structure formation and transport properties. Chemical, physical and mechanical properties of these materials are studied with a combination of experimental testing and conceptual and numerical modelling.

About us

The faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology and delta technology. The research covers global social issues and is closely connected to education as well as the work of a wide range of knowledge institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to realise these goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.

Terms and Conditions

Closing the material loops of mineral wool at the end of its lifecycle by introducing novel technology and value chain to CDW sorting, analysis, pre-treatment, processing, novel products development, market introduction and commercialization is the main goal of the European H2020 project Wool2Loop (mineral wool waste back to loop with advanced sorting, pre-treatment and alkali activation). We seek a PhD to design alkali-activated mineral wool mixtures for 3D printing products and elements. Based on printing nozzle and material delivery system developed by other partners within the Wool2Loop-project, you will focus on material mixture design, i.e., rheological and mechanical properties for determination of suitable early age printability, consistency and stability to meet the printing process in a small lab scale and large industrial scale. The results of this project will provide information about printing time and materials used for online 3D printing platform. This PhD research will be in close collaboration with other partners within the Wool2Loop-project.

We are looking for a motivated student with an MSc degree in in Civil Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or Chemical Engineering. You have demonstrable affinity with experimental research on construction materials; preferably on alkali activated materials.

You are fluent in English (written and spoken) and have good communication skills

You are a team worker, but independent thinking researcher

You are result oriented, you are a creative and structured thinker

TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
