PhD in Geophysics (Immersive Wave Experimentation)
ETH Zurich

The Exploration and Environmental Geophysics group at ETH Zürich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) has an opening for an ambitious and talented PhD candidate, starting between October 1st and December 1st, 2019.

Project background
The position is closely related to a novel wave propagation laboratory for immersive experimentation currently under construction at ETH and is funded through the EU ERC Advanced project 694407 – MATRIX.

Job description
We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in the physics of wave propagation. The position will have a strong experimental focus taking advantage of the complete control in the characterization of media that is possible in the Centre for Immersive Wave Experimentation (CIWE), with its fully closed surfaces of sensors and actuators. We can offer a dynamic workplace with highly qualified scientists, excellent computational facilities, a broad range of state-of-the-art geophysical equipment, including access to the new CIWE facility for immersive experimentation. In addition, our group has access to high-performance computing systems at ETH. The Exploration and Environmental Geophysics group is embedded in a vibrant Earth Sciencedepartment.

Your profile
Successful candidates should hold an MSc degree in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics, or similar and should have a strong background and/or interest in mathematical (Geo)physics but must also be equally concerned with how their results could be tested and applied. Experience with full-waveform modelling methods (e.g., finite-differences) is a definite advantage.
