PhD Opto-Spintronics in 2D materials (1.0 FTE) (219285)

Organisation

Since its foundation in 1614, the University of Groningen has enjoyed an international reputation as a dynamic and innovative centre of higher education offering high-quality teaching and research. Study and career in a wide variety of disciplines encourage currently more than 31,000 students and researchers to develop their individual talents. Belonging to the best research universities in Europe, the top 100 universities in the world and joining forces with prestigious partner universities and networks, we are truly an international place of knowledge.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates for a PhD position in Opto-Spintronics in 2D materials to join the Opto-Spintronics of Nanostructures group at the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials of the University of Groningen.

The Opto-Spintronics of Nanostructures is a new group within the Physics of Nanodevices research unit, focusing on the study of magnetic and spintronic properties of atomically-thin layers and heterostructures by optical means.

Job description

Your project will focus on the study of spins and magnetism in two-dimensional materials. You will use state-of-the-art fabrication techniques to assemble heterostructures composed of different two-dimensional materials, giving origin to emergent phenomena. Combining magneto-optical and electric transport techniques you will measure spin-related effects in these nanodevices, as the spin-Hall effect and spin-orbit torque.

Qualifications

You have

• a master degree in physics, electrical engineering, material science, or another related field

• previous experience in optics, electronic transport, nanofabrication, or two-dimensional materials is a plus

• some computer programming knowledge is appreciated

• good spoken and written English proficiency is required.

Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary of € 2,325 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,972 gross per month in the fourth and final year

• a full-time position (1.0 FTE)

• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income

• an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance

• a position for four years; first, you will get a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years; prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the contract period is to be expected

• a PhD training programme is part of the agreement and you will be enrolled in the Graduate School of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

The conditions of employment are available at the University of Groningen website under Human Resources: https://www.rug.nl/about-us/work-with-us/

Application

Do you meet our Qualification criteria? If yes, your application should include:

• letter of motivation

• CV (including contact information for at least two academic references)

• transcripts from your bachelor’s and master’s degree.

Please submit your application until 30 June 2019 11.59pm / before 1 July 2019 Dutch local time (CEST) by means of the application form (click on "Apply" below on the advertisement on the university website).
