The M-group of Bruges Campus is a young, entrepreneurial and dynamic team of 6 professors with more than 20 researchers and is renown in the domain of mechatronic systems. The department of Mechanical Engineering in Bruges, which is member of the M-group, currently expands its research portfolio with smart blue energy and hydrogen systems and is offering a PhD position focusing on maritime energy systems.

Project

The European, Federal and Regional authorities strongly support incentives that encourage the development of renewable and sustainable technologies.  Systems that convert ocean energy to electrical energy can contribute significantly to the future European electrical power demand, but several challenges still need to be tackled before it can compete with the now widely available mature solar and wind energy systems.  The PhD position will focus on ocean energy systems, covering both theoretical and experimental aspects.

Profile

  • You have master’s degree in Engineering (Sciences or Technology), with a background in fluid mechanics
  • You have experience in the domain of computational fluid mechanics
  • You are interested in conducting applied research
  • You have a hands-on attitude
  • You have a critical mindset and are able to analyse research results in a comprehensive way
  • You are a team worker, have good communication skills, but you can work autonomously and independently
  • You are willing to report regularly to the supervisor
  • You are willing to contribute to the academic activities on Bruges Campus
  • You are interested in obtaining a PhD degree

Offer

  • You will be working in the challenging domain of ocean energy systems in the recently built Bruges Campus of KU Leuven
  • You will become part of a new research unit
  • You will be offered a position of 1 year, which will be extended to cover a typical PhD track after positive evaluation
