PhD Position in Novel Pixel Architectures for Infrared Imagers

The MICAS research group of the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) consists of seven professors and +75 PhD researchers. The research at MICAS is very broad, covering topics ranging from nanoscale devices, to high-level digital and machine learning systems and everything in between, like analog and mixed-signal circuits, RF and mm-wave circuits and chips for optical communication, imaging and power management. What defines MICAS, besides this multitude of domains, is our focus on the real-world applicability of our ideas. This is why all our PhD students make chips and devices in a variety of technologies which are characterised in our state-of-the-art measurement laboratories.


The use of in-pixel digitisation in image sensors is expected to be a real game changer because it leads to more intelligent imagers that are more portable across technology nodes. This is happening now thanks to the developments in silicon process technology. Transistor sizes have shrunk significantly to a level that enables designers to put many transistors in a single pixel. Our goal is to integrate a small, efficient and low-power ADC in every pixel that replaces the traditional high-speed, high-power and large shared ADC in the periphery.

During this project, we envision to find an answer to the following questions:

  • What new challenges do we need to overcome when shifting from analog to digital pixels?
  • Can digital pixels perform better in terms of noise, speed and power consumption compared to their analog counterparts?
  • What is the best topology to implement such a digital pixel specifically for SWIR (short-wavelength infrared) imaging?
