PhD Student Position in Organs-on-Chip

The OOC Lab focuses on the development of advanced in-vitro models of the lung and its diseases. Our work takes place at the interface of engineering, microfluidics, microtechnologies, cell biology and material sciences.

Project description:

We recently reported about the second-generation lung-on-chip (1), which unlike earlier lung-on-chip models (2), is based on a stretchable membrane made of proteins of the lung ECM. The aim of the project is to bring this disruptive technology to a pre-industrialized prototype level. We expect the doctoral student to acquire and apply knowledge ranging from engineering, microfluidic phenomena, production of microfluidic devices (e.g. soft lithography, injection moulding) and cell biology (e.g. cell culture, immunostaining, confocal microscopy) during their doctoral thesis.

Qualifications:

We are looking for an exceptional applicant with the following knowledge and skills:
  • Applicants must hold a MSc degree in Mechanical Eng., Microsystems Eng., Biomedical Eng., or equivalent
  • Experience in designing microfluidic systems (CAD, numerical simulation)
  • Excellent theoretical understanding of microfluidic phenomena
  • Enjoys setting up and conducting experimental skills (microfluidic set-up, microfluidic and cell culture experiments)
  • Very good oral and written communication skills in English are required.
Personal skills:

The applicant must have a creative and committed personality, good organizational skills, the ability to work autonomously, but willing to perform and interact efficiently within a multidisciplinary team.

We offer:
  • A friendly, stimulating, international and multidisciplinary environment.
  • A workplace in Bern, Switzerland's capital, known for its high quality of life and surrounded by beautiful nature, perfect for hiking, biking, swimming and winter sports.
  • The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Graduate School for Biomedical Engineering of the University of Bern (medical faculty).
How to apply:

To apply for this position please send a letter of motivation, your CV and the contact
details of two references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number, letter of recommendation) in a single pdf document to job.ooc(at)artorg.unibe.ch.

The review of the applications will start immediately and close May 31st 2020. For more information, visit our website and for questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Olivier Guenat.
