The Joint Research Centre

Australia-China Joint Research Centre of Offshore Wind and Wave Energy is a transnational research body jointly funded by the Australian Department of Industry, Innovation, and Science and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, via the ACSRF-JRC scheme . The Joint Research Centre involves over 10 partners across the two nations with expertise in both offshore wind and wave energy industries, led by the University of Adelaide and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The aim of the Joint Research Centre is to reduce costs of ocean renewable energy and make it a competitive sustainable energy source for the future.

The project

This project will offer you an exceptional opportunity to work within a large international and multidisciplinary team, studying hybrid wind and wave energy conversion systems.

Based in the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the University of Adelaide, you will undertake research activities in the conceptual design of electrical power conversion sub-systems for the hybrid wind- and wave- energy converter array. The aim of your study is to understand the synergies in combining electrical sub-systems of the offshore wind turbines and the wave energy converters, and consequently to reduce the costs of total electrical infrastructure. You will work closely with academics and postgraduate students from various academic backgrounds across the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences. You will engage with researchers and engineers at other nodes of the Australia-China Joint Research Centre, both interstate and overseas.

The applicant

Applicants interested in the ocean renewable energy harnessing, electrical power conversion systems, and complex mechatronics system who hold an Honours degree in Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering, Ocean Engineering or related fields will be considered favorably. Strong Matlab programming skills (or equivalent) are also desirable. For more information about the entry requirements for Higher Degrees by Research at University of Adelaide, please visit the Adelaide Graduate Centre’s website.

Students who meet the University’s conditions of admission and wish to be considered for a tuition fee waiver, are expected to have completed a relevant Bachelor degree with First Class Honours, or a Masters degree that contains a significant (and relevant) research component with equivalent academic performance.

Outstanding international applicants who are eligible for admission and have achieved a 1st class Honours grade or masters equivalent may also qualify for a tuition fee waiver as approved by the Faculty.

Remuneration and additional benefits

The selected student will receive a tax free stipend to the value of AU$27,596 per annum for 3 years. The stipend will be awarded on a yearly basis according to satisfactory progress.

Access to authorised travel, tailored professional development training, and world-class research infrastructure such as the wave tank facility at the State Key Lab of Ocean Engineering in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Research project funds will also be available.

To be eligible you will need to

  • Be studying full-time and onshore in Adelaide, Australia (and Shanghai, China if interested in receiving a joint PhD degree in conjunction with Shanghai Jiao Tong University).
  • Fulfil the minimum English language requirement. This is mandatory and cannot be waived.
  • Be assessed by the Adelaide Graduate Centre as meeting all conditions for admission to the Doctoral program.
  • Be willing to provide your personal details to the institutes by way of a Student Deed Poll.
  • Not hold a qualification at the same or at a higher level than the research higher degree program you are undertaking.
  • Not be receiving a living allowance award, scholarship or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the RTP Scholarship living allowance rate AU$27,596 per annum to undertake the research higher degree program.

Your faculty’s broader role
