The Joint Research Centre

Australia-China Joint Research Centre of Offshore Wind and Wave Energy is a transnational research body jointly funded by the Australian Department of Industry, Innovation, and Science and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, via theACSRF-JRC scheme . The Joint Research Centre involves over 10 partners across the two nations with expertise in both offshore wind and wave energy industries, led by the University of Adelaide and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The aim of the Joint Research Centre is to reduce costs of ocean renewable energy and make it a competitive sustainable energy source for the future.

 

The project

This project will offer you an exceptional opportunity to work within a large international and multidisciplinary team, studying hybrid wind and wave energy conversion systems.

 

You will be based at the University of Adelaide in the School of Mathematical Sciences, under the supervision of Dr Luke Bennetts . As part of the Joint Research Centre, you will work closely with academics and postgraduate students across the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Adelaide. You will also engage with researchers at other nodes of the Joint Research Centre, both in Australia and China.

 

Your project will focus on modelling and analysing arrays of hybrid wind- and wave- energy converters using theoretical and numerical methods. The aim of your study is to improve understanding of hydrodynamics on the performance of the hybrid system, in both operational and survival states. As part of your project, you will work at the State Key Laboratory at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, under the supervision of Prof. Ye Li, using their world-class wave tank facilities to validate model outputs.

 

The applicant

The project is appropriate for those interested in dynamics, modelling and computation, and application to renewable energy. Applicants should hold an Honours degree in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering or a related field. Programming skills in Matlab or equivalent are desirable.

Applicants requiring a tuition fee waiver must (i) meet the University’s conditions of admission, and (ii) are expected to have completed a relevant Bachelor degree with First Class Honours, or a Masters degree that contains a significant (and relevant) research component with equivalent academic performance. Outstanding international applicants who are eligible for admission and have achieved a 1st class Honours grade or masters equivalent may also qualify for a tuition fee waiver as approved by the Faculty.

 

Remuneration and additional benefits

 

The selected student will receive a tax free stipend to the value of AU$27,596 per annum for 3 years. The stipend will be awarded on a yearly basis according to satisfactory progress.

 

Students will have access to authorised travel, tailored professional development training, and world-class research infrastructure, including the wave-tank facility at the State Key Lab of Ocean Engineering in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Research project funds will also be available.

 

Upon successful completion, the PhD candidate will receive a joint PhD Degree awarded by the University of Adelaide and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, both consistently ranked in the top 150 universities globally.

 

To be eligible you will need to

  • Be studying full-time and onshore in Adelaide, Australia (no less than 24 months) and in Shanghai, China (no less than 12 months).
  • Fulfil the minimum English language requirement. This is mandatory and cannot be waived.
  • Be assessed by the Adelaide Graduate Centre as meeting all conditions for admission to the Doctoral program.
  • Be willing to provide your personal details to the institutes by way of a Student Deed Poll.
  • Not hold a qualification at the same or at a higher level than the research higher degree program you are undertaking.
  • Not be receiving a living allowance award, scholarship or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the RTP Scholarship living allowance rate (AU$27,596) to undertake the research higher degree program.
