Project Detail:

The simulation of complex automotive systems requires methods from different disciplines such as dynamics, fluid mechanics, friction, material science etc. The aim of this project is to explore fluid-structure interaction in thin-film lubricated contacts, by developing appropriate computational methods and models. This project is funded by an EPSRC iCASE award with support from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).     

Initial research will focus on mathematical modelling methods to address the general multi-physics problem, with findings applied to the industry-relevant problem of simulating windscreen wiper performance. The models developed will show how various design parameters (e.g. blade stiffness distribution) influence the wiper’s ability to maintain visibility throughout a range of driving conditions.

The successful applicant will work within the dynamics research group in the Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering Department at Loughborough University and benefit from an extensive range of facilities including a vibration lab and high-performance computing facilities. The successful applicant will spend several months working with cross-functional technical experts at JLR’s World Class Engineering Centre to both develop the research and implement the output into the Design of JLR’s next generation products.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should

  • Have a first class honours or good upper second class degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline (such as physics or mathematics).
  • Demonstrate knowledge or experience applicable to one or more of the following areas: multibody dynamics; mechanics; mathematical modelling.
  • Experience of programming in MATLAB/Simulink, or experience with multibody simulation packages (e.g. ADAMS, SIMPACK) is desirable but not essential.
  • Meet the minimum English Language requirements, details available on the website
  • Satisfy the UK residency requirement – see EPSRC eligibility criteria


Funding information:

The project is jointly funded by the EPSRC and JLR. The studentship provides a tax-free stipend of £17,777 per annum for four years plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. Due to funding restrictions, this is only available to those who are eligible to pay UK/EU fees.
