Co-supervisor: Dr. Di Sarno, Luigi (UoL, Civil Engineering Department)

Project Description:

Concrete is commonly known as the most widely used construction material worldwide for infrastructure development. However, the rapidly developing world and the massive evolution of urban development have caused a massive surge in environmental pollution and depletion of raw materials. By making an optimised utilisation of industrial waste and by-products to make concrete is no doubt a significant step toward sustainable construction. This project aims to characterise the development of artificial aggregates made from solid wastes which would  include but not limited to coal combustion residuals, sludge from water treatment, red mud and phosphogypsum. The physical, chemical mechanical properties and durability of the newly engineered aggregates will be evaluated to ensure their suitability for civil engineering applications. Various treatment procedures will also be explored aiming at further enhancing the performance of the aggregates.
