PhD Studentship in Advanced Ultra-Short Pulse Two-Micron Fibre Lasers for Medical and Bio-Science Imaging

Fibre and Systems Group

Location: Highfield Campus

Closing Date: Saturday 30 May 2020

Reference: 1258420PN

Supervisor: Professor David Richardson FRS, FREng

Co-supervisor: Dr Jonathan Price

Project description

This fully funded project focusses on the latest fibre lasers operating in the two-micron wavelength region which have the potential to open-up a wealth of new applications in medical imaging, industrial processing and optical communications. Based on the rare ability to fabricate fibres in-house (one of just two universities in the UK), our pioneering research in the development of Thulium lasers moves in parallel with novel fibre developments.

The project will create a world leading femto/pico-second pulsed fibre laser source, addressing a host of technical challenges in the process. Nonlinear frequency conversion of the output will be used to transfer the power from the laser to longer wavelengths. The work will combine experiments and simulations, together with the theory of lasers and nonlinear optics, aligned to the preferences of the student. If you have strong undergraduate mathematical skills you are particularly encouraged to apply. You will emerge as well-respected young scientists ready to embark on strong careers in this rapidly growing field.

The project is underpinned by a large collaborative EPSRC grant, which will drive the project aims primarily towards lasers for medical imaging. There are real opportunities to work closely with SPI Lasers Ltd, a major manufacturer of fibre lasers based in Southampton and project partner on the grant, enabling experience to be gained of working with industry.

Within the University, your membership of our large research group will ensure a support network of students and more senior scientists / engineers:

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Prof. David Richardson ( ), or Dr Jonathan Price ( Tel: +44 (0) 2380 594761).

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 30 May 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students, an enhanced stipend of £15,285 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
