Postdoc Position in Biomedical Engineering

About us

Located in the prosperous capital of Bavaria and home to over 39000 students, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of the world’s top universities (top 4 European technical universities in THE World University Ranking, top 50 in Shanghai Ranking, top 10 in Global University Employability Ranking, etc.) and home to one of the most vibrant environments in robotics. It is committed to excellence in research and teaching, interdisciplinary education, and the active promotion of promising young scientists. TUM benefits from the healthy mix of companies and startups of all sizes headquartered in the region and is tightly connected to regional research hospitals. The university also forges strong links with companies and scientific institutions across the world. The TUM Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM) is directed by Prof. Sami Haddadin, and is a globally visible interdisciplinary research center for machine intelligence, which is the integration of robotics, artificial intelligence and perception. Its three central innovation sectors are the future of health, the future of work, and the future of mobility. More than 50 professors from various TUM faculties cooperate within the framework of MSRM.

About the DHM-MSRM Joint Center

The German Heart Center Munich (DHM) is a scientifically active hospital within numerous national and international research projects that strives to be an important pioneer of personalized medicine of the future. DHM and TUM MSRM plan to join forces to establish the AI Heart Center as the nucleus of a long-term special research zone and reference center for the digital revolution in medicine. Within the framework of this lighthouse initiative, useful information technology from the fields of AI-based data analysis, physics-informed modelling, sensor data fusion, robotics, machine learning, VR/AR, and image fusion will be further developed in an exemplary and targeted manner for clinical applications. Similar to the A9 section designated for autonomous driving, the AI Heart Center will be strategically developed for top interdisciplinary research and development, but also for the pilot and field (clinical) application of the latest methods and technologies. This joint center will thus become a model for the innovative strength of the Munich location, where cutting-edge medicine and technology work together to create the future of health.

Currently, 8 TUM Principal Investigators (PIs) and 6 DHM PIs are actively engaged in building up the Joint Center. DHM has built special work spaces in its new research building to realize the DHM-MSRM Joint Center. In addition, intensive care test beds are planned within the Clinic for Cardiovascular Surgery in order to ideally integrate technical innovations into the daily routine of the clinic.

Job Description

We are looking for an EXCELLENT postdoctoral researcher to support in building up and establishing the DHM-MSRM Joint Center. Responsibilities will include harmonizing the scientific agenda of the internal MSRM network, contributing to our current Digital Suite digitization effort, especially regarding smart data fusion and labeling from existing monitoring devices with live observations of actions for logging, analysis and support of big data-based diagnosis tasks and visualization. Contributions to new proposals for 3rd party funding are expected. Please consider applying if you have background in modeling of actions and sensor data fusion. Additional knowledge in biomedical engineering is a plus. German language skills are not required to apply, but it is expected that speaking skills will be learned for daily interaction in a medical setting.
