Postdoc Position in Long term performance and durability of alkali activated mineral wool waste
The TU Delft School of Civil Engineering

Job Title:Postdoc in Long term performance and durability of alkali activated mineral wool waste
Faculty: Faculty Civil Engineering
Working hour: 36-40 uur per week
Contract: 2.5 years
Salary: 3389 - 4274 euro per maand (volledige dagtaak)

Faculty Civil Engineering

The position is located within the department Materials, Mechanics, Management & Design (3MD). 3MD focuses on the design, mechanics, materials and management of civil infrastructures and buildings. A multi-scale research approach is followed, starting at micro-scale (materials), to meso-scale (structures) and to macro-scale (infrastructures/systems). The department governs the entire life cycle from develop, design, build, maintain, operate to demolish or reuse. The department has strong competences in modelling and design for both civil infrastructures as well as buildings.

Materials & Environment focuses on the development of new materials, self-sensing materials and manufactured materials (3D-printing), and on the behaviour of the more traditional cement-based materials and materials based on alternative binder systems with respect to hydration mechanisms, structure formation and transport properties. Chemical, physical and mechanical properties of these materials are studied with a combination of experimental testing and conceptual and numerical modelling.

The faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology and delta technology. The research covers global social issues and is closely connected to education as well as the work of a wide range of knowledge institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to realise these goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.

Closing the material loops of mineral wool at the end of its lifecycle by introducing novel technology and value chain to CDW sorting, analysis, pre-treatment, processing, novel products development, market introduction and commercialization is the main goal of the European H2020 project Wool2Loop (mineral wool waste back to loop with advanced sorting, pre-treatment and alkali activation). We seek a postdoc as a part of Wool2Loop the main aim of this postdoc project is to investigate the long term performance and durability of alkali-activated mineral wool materials. In the research program, fundamental understanding of the degradation mechanisms and the microstructure development of alkali-activated mineral wools under different exposure conditions is needed. Experiments on decay mechanism and long-term performance of alkali-activated mineral wools will be carried out. This research will close collaborate with other partners with Wool2Loop.

We are looking for a motivated colleague with a professional academic and independent working attitude. The candidate is expected to have a doctorate in Civil Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or Chemical Engineering. You are experienced in experimental research on construction materials; preferably on alkali activated materials.

Besides that;

You are fluent in English (written and spoken) and have good communication skills

You have demonstrable experience with independent scientific writing and have good social skills

You are result oriented and you are a creative and structured thinker
