Postdoctoral Position in Materials Science
Argonne National Laboratory
United States

The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral appointee in experimental condensed matter physics. Although exceptional candidates in all areas of experimental condensed matter physics will be considered, particular emphasis will be placed on the dynamical studies of quantum materials and their functionalities. The successful candidate should be highly motivated for research excellence and have a strong track record. He/she will be responsible for conducting research related to the experimental characterization of quantum materials using a range of ultrafast techniques including terahertz, optical, and x-ray radiation. Candidates with a strong background in quantum materials, ultrafast lasers, and synchrotron or FEL-based x-ray diffraction techniques are highly encouraged to apply. The selected individual will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and gain in-depth knowledge of the research frontiers in the fields of quantum materials. He/she will also have the opportunity to be a part of a world-class scientific team and lead tasks in vigorous research programs. Position Requirements Minimum Requirements: PhD in a related field (About to receive or have received within the last 3 years) Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork. Knowledge, Skills and Experience: Considerable: A strong background in condensed matter physics and materials science is required. Any prior research experience in ultrafast science is preferred. Considerable experience in experimental research of materials physics systems using advanced optical and x-ray spectroscopy or microscopy techniques is advantageous. Excellent written and oral communication skills are needed. Good: Experience in the development of time-resolved microscopy / spectroscopy experimental platforms for quantum material research. The ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Desirable: The ability to lead interdisciplinary research projects in a highly collaborative environment. Experience with developing and carrying out synchrotron and free electron laser x-ray diffraction experiments is a plus but not required.
