About This Opportunity

We are inviting applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the photonics team at The University of Queensland to work on multi-scale computational modelling of light interaction in multi-layered, multi-component tissues on the extremely wide spectral range of electromagnetic radiation – between the terahertz and the near infrared spectral ranges.

This position will involve both experimental and computational tasks, including developing and optimizing experimental procedures for measurement of tissue optical properties at the micro- and macro scales, evaluating data quality and reporting experimental outcomes. The successful candidate should have strong hands-on laboratory experience, particularly working with biological tissues, an excellent understanding of optics and spectroscopy, extensive experience in design and planning of experiments involving biological samples, as well as the ability to handle and analyse spectroscopic data from a number of spectroscopic techniques using advanced techniques such as machine and deep learning. Excellent communication and writing skills are necessary and an expectation is that the candidate shows high level of leadership and time management skills.

Responsibilities further include assessing the research outcomes, reporting project findings and providing advice to PhD/MPhil or final year BE/ME thesis students on related projects.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this position you will require a PhD level degree in Applied Mathematics, Medical/Applied Physics, or related fields with a demonstrated uunderstanding of fundamental light-matter interaction and knowledge of approaches for modelling light the phenomena.

You should have proven expertise in development and application of advanced classification and regression techniques using machine and deep learning approaches, advanced capabilities in programming, including translating computational workflows to publishable software modules/packages for the research community and proven expertise in spectroscopic and imaging techniques including in Near and/or Mid infrared (NIR, MIR), and/or THz spectral ranges.

Visa sponsorship may be available for this appointment.

We value diversity and inclusion, and actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Our Diversity and Inclusion webpage contains further information if you require additional support. Accessibility requirements and/or adjustments can be directed to

What We Can Offer
