Postdoctoral Researcher in Developing Novel Organ on Chip Model of Osteoarthritis
University of Twente Department of Developmental Bioengineering
Netherlands

At the Department of Developmental BioEngineering at the University of Twente, a vacancy exists for a postdoc. This vacancy is funded by a recently awarded by the Dutch Research Council (KLEIN grant) and is available immediately. In this project, you will develop a novel organ on chip model of the human joint to understand the gendered nature of osteoarthritis (OA). This state-of-the-art micro-technological approach will be combined with advanced proteomics and metabolomics to deepen the understanding of the onset and progression of OA, with the ultimate goal to allow for more effective development and screening of OA drugs.

Job description

University of Twente’s Technical Medical Centre is widely recognized for its excellence in development of new biomedical solutions and advanced biofabrication technologies. Recently, we have developed microfluidic or organ-on-chip platforms that emulates the various tissues composing the articular joints. You will be responsible for developing and characterizing a microfluidic-based in vitro model that will allow for the investigation of the mechanisms that underpin the gendered nature of OA. Specifically, this model is expected to replicate gender differences, where specific sex-mediated pathophysiology of OA progression can be mechanistically scrutinized, by combining state-of-the art microfluidics and cell biology, with highly valuable and comprehensive proteomics and metabolomics analysis.

Your profile

  • You hold a PhD degree that was based on Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or an equivalent field of research. A background in microfluidics and/or molecular cell biology (-related field) is preferred, but not essential.
  • You have a strong interest in organs-on-chips, microfluidics, and molecular cell biology;
  • You have experience in cell culture, tissue engineering, or microfabrication technologies. Experience in -omics analysis will be considered as a benefit;
  • You have excellent analytical skills and an innate ability for solution oriented problem solving;
  • You are a team player with great communication skills;
  • You have demonstrable leadership potential and experience in the supervision of students;
  • You are fluent in English, both spoken and written.
