Postdoctoral researcher in Modelling of transcranial magnetic stimulation

 

 

We seek a highly qualified and motivated individual with an enthusiastic attitude towards high-quality interdisciplinary research to work as a Postdoctoral Researcher in our research group Electromagnetics in Health Technology. Position is for a period of 1+2.5 years beginning from December 2019.

 

Project description

The research will be a part of the Academy of Finland funded research project “Transcranial magnetic fingerprinting (TMF)”, led by Assistant Professor Ilkka Laakso. In the project, we will develop a new method, transcranial magnetic fingerprinting (TMF), that is based on physical computer modelling and allows the quantification of several characteristics of the activated neurons, including their location, direction, and sensitivity. TMF enables a new non-invasive way to investigate the function and structure of the brain, their interindividual variations and pathological alterations. Detailed quantitative information of the brain physiology can enable new indicators of brain disorders.

 

Main responsibilities

The postdoc will participate in the following two work packages:

(1) Software development and data analysis: Methods for generation of synthetic response and electric field data (e.g. using Monte-Carlo simulations), development of data analysis methods (e.g. pattern recognition), methods for analysing high-density multi-channel EMG data, and testing the methods for real data.

(2) Experiments and electromagnetic modelling: Performing TMS experiments, development of experimental protocols for TMF, multi-channel EMG recordings and related signal processing, MR imaging and segmentation, and modelling of induced electric fields.

The postdoc will collaborate internationally with other research teams, and participate in teaching and instructing PhD and MSc students at Aalto University.

 

Requirements

In the evaluation process, attention will be given to the applicant’s research skills, and their merits and potential in the pertinent research fields.

 

The following are particularly meriting:

  • Strong programming skills in Matlab and other languages such C and Python

  • Deep knowledge in any of the following: computational electromagnetics, transcranial magnetic stimulation, medical imaging, data mining and/or high-density EMG

  • Excellent scientific writing skills

  • Good publication record
