The School of Engineering and Digital Arts (EDA) is launching a new undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering to complement our existing portfolio of Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering courses.

EDA is seeking to appoint a Reader in Mechanical Engineering to undertake research and participate in the administration, development and delivery of our new Mechanical Engineering programme. You should be research-active in a field aligned to Mechanical Engineering (for example bio-medical engineering, design, manufacturing, materials, mechatronics, dynamics or robotics).

You will either lead an emerging Mechanical research group or will become a member of an existing engineering-themed Research Group within EDA. You will have a very strong and established research background, demonstrated by a track record of high-quality publications and other research outputs, alongside international recognition for the standing of their research. Strong communication and team-working skills as well as a higher degree in a relevant discipline are essential.

You will work with a new academic team to establish and develop the Mechanical Engineering degree. You will play a key role in the delivery of undergraduate provision across our engineering programmes, contributing particularly on mechanical engineering and related technology. Commitment to raising awareness of the new degree is important and a desire to develop student potential by enhancing learning opportunities for students from different backgrounds is necessary. Furthermore, the successful applicant will be expected to support the administrative aspects of the School's operation.

To be successful in this role you will have:

A PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject area or other evidence of delivering research of a high quality, commensurate with a research-intensive institution
A very strong, recent track record of high-quality research publications and/or other forms of output appropriate to their fields
Research experience in a thematic area aligned to mechanical engineering
Demonstrable international eminence and impact of research
A significant knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects of relevant areas such as mechanical and industrial design, mechatronics, material properties, dynamics, manufacturing and robotics.
Success in winning external income for research
The School of Engineering & Digital Arts is part of the Faculty of Sciences and prides itself on offering excellent teaching in an environment which is also supporting world-class research in the subject areas in which we teach. We have an excellent track record of achievement in teaching, in research, and in enterprise-led activity, and we maintain strong working contacts with Academic and Industrial Organisations within the UK, in Europe, and worldwide.
