Job summary

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London. The role will involve i.) undertaking large-scale high-order ILES/DNS of turbulent flows using the open source PyFR solver (www.pyfr.org), ii.) managing large databases of high-order ILES/DNS data, and iii.) developing tools for interacting with and analysing these databases. Outputs will feed into the European Commission funded HiFi-TURB project (https://www.numeca.com/HiFiTurb), which has the aim of developing new turbulence model by analysing high-fidelity ILES/DNS datasets using machine learning approaches. The Research Associate will form part of a highly motivated team. There will be opportunities for travel, and for close interaction with world-leading academic/industrial project partners in both the UK and abroad.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Undertaking large-scale high-order ILES/DNS of turbulent flows
  • Managing large databases of high-order ILES/DNS data
  • Developing tools for interacting with and analysing large databases of high-order ILES/DNS data
  • Presenting research at national and international conferences
  • Publishing research in leading journals
  • Helping manage a team of PhD students
  • Engaging with academic/industrial project partners

Essential requirements

  • Experience of undertaking large-scale LES/ILES/DNS of turbulent flows
  • Experience of high-order numerical methods
  • Experience managing RAID storage arrays and handling large datasets
  • Experience with one or more of Python, C++, OpenCL, CUDA

Research Associate

Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Computational Fluid Dynamics or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

Research Assistant

Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Computational Fluid Dynamics or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

Further information

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 - £38,566 per annum.
