Research Assistant / Associate in Operando Microscopy and Spectroscopy for Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Growth and Applicatio
University of Cambridge
United Kingdom

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Research Associate to work on the development of true operando characterisation of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) growth and applications to address key questions of their industrial materials development. The post is funded under a collaborative EPSRC project between the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford as well as Diamond Light Source and a number of industrial partners.

The post holder will join an established team of researchers and focus on understanding the metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) process of TMDs by employing multi-modal operando probing capability. In particular the work will involve using a new purpose built scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) system, as well as MOCVD reactor design and the wider characterisation of as-grown nanomaterials right through to complete device integration for opto-electronics and electro-chemical applications.

The successful applicant is expected to have or be close to obtaining a PhD in electrical engineering, physics, chemistry or materials science and must have a very good working knowledge and a publication record in electron microscopy and spectroscopy of 2D or related materials. Preference will be given to candidates who also have experience and a track record in metal-organic (MO)CVD.

The tasks of the post holder will include the development of appropriate research methods/metrology, the undertaking of an ambitious, frontier research program, management tasks for UK and worldwide collaborations incl. industry and the wide dissemination of results. Regular travel to collaborators in Oxford and at the Diamond Light Source is expected.

See Further Information (HR7) for more details of ideal post holder attributes.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
