University of Cambridge Department of Engineering
United Kingdom

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on Optical Diagnostics in Flame Synthesis

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are to plan, design and conduct experiments on flame spray synthesis, including optical diagnostics and particle sampling, in communication with other researchers on the topic; to study the relevant literature, analyse results and prepare presentations for discussion with the wider research group within Cambridge and with UCL researchers on modelling; to plan, prepare and write publications for journals and conferences, possibly jointly with the other members of the group; and to advise and train incoming PhD students on experimental and analytical methods, as well as safe working methods.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role include having (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering or a related field, with a focus on experimental work in optical diagnostics. A proven record of independent designing and building of lab-scale experimental equipment, including optical and flow systems, and ideally, reacting flow systems. Demonstrated capabilities in the delivery of analysis of experimental results, including relevant understanding of statistical noise treatment and instrument calibration, as relevant to optical diagnostics. Possess an understanding of relevant properties of materials, including chemical/physical thermodynamics leading to properties. Alternatively, experience with microscopy or particle characterisation. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including day-to-day interaction with technicians, scientists and PhD students in training. Superior presentation and written communication.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
