About This Opportunity 

 

For a research project with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, we are investigating the interaction of pedestrians and motor vehicles at slip lanes for left turns at signalised intersections. Under supervision of the Chief Investigator (Professor Mark Hickman), the research assistant would be involved in primary data collection and data analysis to support the research project.

 

The Casual Research Assistant will provide technical research support and subject matter expertise in support of traffic engineering studies at all stages of the research life-cycle.

 

Key responsibilities will include: 

 

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate aspects of traffic data collection and data analysis for a research project into left-turn slip lane operations and safety.

  • Assist in the design of research studies, under supervision of senior staff.

  • Apply and/or instruct others on the application of advanced or specialist or technical research skills or processes, including traffic data collection and data analysis.

  • Assist in the conduct of major or complex experiments, tasks or programs in a real-world traffic environment, at specified locations across the Brisbane City Council local government area.

  • Troubleshoot issues with scientific/technical equipment.

  • Undertake maintenance and upkeep of facilities and equipment.

  • Conduct data analysis, to include review of data and video imagery collected on site, to reach engineering conclusions on the operation and safety of these sites.

 

Safety

  • Contribute to the safe and efficient operation of research equipment, infrastructure, methodologies and protocols in field data collection.

 

Research and administrative support

  • Assist with drafting research documentation, including ethics and funding applications.

  • Undertake literature searches and reviews.

  • Assist with routine team administration.

  • Assist with preparing reports, graphs, figures and presentations on research outcomes at different stages of the research cycle outcomes.

  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor.

About You  

 

Alongside the completion of coursework in basic probability and statistical analysis, we are seeking candidates who can demonstrate:

 

  • Familiarity with traffic analysis as obtained through a course in traffic engineering or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

  • Excellent practical research skills and experience in relevant research methodology or techniques required for this body of research.

  • An ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

  • An ability to work independently on routine procedures.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Well-organised, methodical and self-motivated.

  • Previous experience in a similar role would be considered favourably.

 

What We Can Offer 

 

This is a casual position, approximately 18 hours per week expected to complete major project work through to June 2024. 

 

The rate of pay will be $49.15 per hour, plus 11% Superannuation.
