Research Assistant/Associate in Discrete Event Simulation

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on the development of discrete event simulation models of patient flow and hospital operations.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key focus of the researcher will include: (i) extending the simulation model to account for the rapidly changing circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic; (ii) extending the current model to support recovery of selected non-Covid services; and (iii) conducting detailed work with clinical and operational teams to improve productivity in non-Covid services using engineering techniques, informed by opportunities identified by the model. The researcher will extract data from hospital information systems and generate insights regarding critical patient flow parameters through statistical data analysis. The researcher will also be expected to set the foundation for further work on the development of hospital digital twins that help a deeper understanding of hospital operations, asset management and patient outcomes.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are expertise in discrete event simulation modelling, patient flow modelling and data analysis in a healthcare context. The researcher must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Industrial Engineering or relevant discipline.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,715 - £30,942 Research Associate: £32,816 - £40,322

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.
