Research Assistant/Associate in Offshore Foundation Systems (Fixed Term)

A position is available for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering to work on a research project on offshore foundation systems.

The successful applicant will join the Geotechnical and Environmental Group to investigate the possibility of taking advantage of the dissipation mechanisms connected to the attainment of the strength in the foundation soil to optimize the design of offshore systems under severe seismic actions. The focus of the work will be on the implementation of modified Newmark methods and fully coupled dynamic analyses of soil-structure interaction, to evaluate the performance of the system in terms of permanent displacements. Small scale physical modelling in a geotechnical centrifuge will also be carried out to benchmark numerical solutions. The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are: numerical and physical modelling of soil structure interaction under seismic actions for offshore foundation systems, including developing modified Newmark methods to evaluate permanent displacements, carrying out fully coupled dynamic analyses of soil structure interaction, developing procedures to deal with liquefaction issues, designing and carrying out small experimental programme on scale models of caisson foundations to benchmark numerical analyses, evaluating test data against numerical results, writing project reports and research publications and attending relevant conferences.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering or related subject, knowledge of geomechanics, knowledge of fully coupled geotechnical numerical analyses, attitude to teamwork, track record of authoring high quality academic publications, experience in physical and numerical modelling of soil structure interaction under seismic actions, experience of managing own work load.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,243 - £30,395; Research Associate: £32,236 - £39,609

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
