Intelligent Systems for Medicine Laboratory (ISML), with 5 academic staff (3 grant-funded), ~20 PhD and Masters students and varying number of visitors, is the largest research laboratory within the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the largest biomedical engineering laboratory in Western Australia. ISML’s mission is to “improve clinical outcomes through the development and appropriate use of technology”. Thanks to its interdisciplinary focus and very close connections to the best research institutions in the world, ISML provides a perfect environment for the development of PhD candidates and early career researchers. For over 15 years, the Intelligent Systems for Medicine Laboratory at The University of Western Australia (UWA) has been at the forefront of developing finite element and meshless algorithms for BVPs of solid and fluid mechanics, bioelectric and magnetics fields.

About the opportunity

As the appointee, you will be expected to work with Chief Investigators, Partner Investigators and other partners and collaborating researchers (including postgraduate, Honours, and High Degree Research students) to undertake research associated with National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) project ‘Towards better neuronavigation in epilepsy surgery: pre-operative MRI to intra-operative CT registration’.

The role will involve patient-specific computations for neuronavigation.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • A PhD in bioengineering, mechanical engineering, or a field closely related to the project
  • Detailed knowledge of non-linear continuum mechanics and numerical analysis, in particular meshless methods for boundary value problems for partial differential equations
  • Proficiency in computer programming including implementation of algorithms of computational continuum mechanics, in particular, algorithms that advance computational mechanics (or biomechanics) beyond finite element analysis
