Research Associate / Fellow in Mechanical Materials and Manufacture Engineering
University of Nottingham Department of Mechanical Materials and Manufacture Engineering
United Kingdom

Research Associate/Fellow (Fixed term)

Closing Date
Thursday, 3rd September 2020
Job Type
Mechanical Materials & Manuf Eng
£27511 to £30942 per annum, depending on skills and experience (£30942 with relevant PhD).

We are currently seeking a Research Associate/Fellow to join a research project funded by EPSRC, focussed on the discovery of ‘Next Generation Biomaterials’ (EP/N006615/1)”. The overall project aim is to discover the next generation of biomaterials targeting the treatment of infectious diseases/cancers and to deliver the potential of regenerative medicine and future medical devices. The successful candidate will join highly motivated and well-funded research teams within the Faculty of Engineering and the Schools of Pharmacy and Life Sciences.

The focus of this specific role within the team is the design and development of novel, bioactive, particles via the synthesis and use of molecularly designed polymeric surfactants. The polymeric surfactants will be synthesised using controlled polymerisation techniques and the performance of the bioactive particles produced for their use will be tested by the project’s application specialists, either as produced or when used as feedstock’s for additive manufacturing processes. The candidate will be expected to optimise the molecular design and synthesis of these novel surfactant via controlled polymerisation routes and develop them into formulations suitable for processing via Microfluidic and AM techniques. Thus, there will also be a requirement to develop routes to scale up the particle manufacture of these to the multi 100’s of gram scale needed for manufacture with AM techniques.

The post will be based within the Faculty of Engineering and led by Professor Derek Irvine. The candidate will have to coordinate with the application focused members of the team to deliver samples of formulated inks for processing, contribute to the interpretation of the spectroscopic/application data and contribute to the AM processing method development. The candidate will also be required to liaise with the project’s industrial collaborators and present findings of this work at national and international conferences. An aptitude for critical thinking and a flexible approach to collaborative research is essential, since the project will interact with multiple researchers and disciplines and this will play a major role in ensuring the success of the project.

Candidates should have, or be close to completion of, a PhD (or be about to obtain) or equivalent in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or similar Science / Engineering, together with a keen interest in both the application of their materials in end-user applications and the up-scaling of laboratory materials/techniques toward manufacturing.

This full-time (36.25 hours per week) post is fixed-term until 08 May 2021.
