Job summary

Applications are invited for a full-time researcher based in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London to work on a research project that aims to benchmark the extent to which impacts related to buildings can be reduced through efficient and innovative use of construction materials, on local to UK-wide to global scales. The project is funded by the EPSRC – New Investigator Award programme and is titled “Assessing Material Efficiency and Impacts in Buildings (AMEIB)”. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing novel computational methodology that spatially links construction materials availability, demand, and materials properties to environmental impacts. They will also develop prototypes of the lowest environmental impact candidate materials identified through this modelling work (if time permits). The investigation will be initially undertaken at the local and UK scales, but with an aim to extend to the international and global scales.

This is a fixed term appointment for 9 months, from 15th October 2020.

Duties and responsibilities

    • To develop a database of construction material stocks including various materials and location data
    • To conduct and plan own scientific work with appropriate supervision.
    • To submit high quality publications to refereed journals.
    • To assist in organising project workshops as required.
    • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings and any code developed.

Essential requirements

    • PhD qualification in engineering, science, economics, or equivalent experience
    • Basic understanding of material properties
    • Ability to communicate effectively via presentations and written publications
    • Well organised, attention to detail, critical thinking, and ability to work independently
    • Ability to learn new skills and build relationships with new people in an effective manner

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 - £38,566 per annum.
