Summary of role: The University of Manchester is the lead partner in the EPSRC funded Robotics and Artificial Intelligence for Nuclear (RAIN) Research Hub. This programme of work will be completed with engineers and scientists from academia and industry working at sites located across the UK and internationally and aims to develop robotic systems that will have a major impact on the nuclear industry (see for further details).

Based in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester, you will develop and conduct research into ground-based robotic systems suitable for monitoring and surveying nuclear facilities. The research will involve significant collaboration with several other partners in the RAIN Hub, particularly the University of Oxford and the UKAEA's RACE centre.
The research will involve integrating technologies developed across the RAIN Hub and demonstrating the capabilities and limitations of the resulting system. Furthermore, the effects that radiation has on the electronic systems used within the robots will be investigated and path-planning techniques that consider radiation dose will need to be studied.

Qualifications and experience:

• You must hold a PhD (or equivalent) degree in the field of engineering, electronic & electrical engineering, mechatronic engineering, robotics or a related discipline and have experience in the design and testing of robotic devices.
• You must have practical experience of developing robotic systems and system integration (mechanical, electrical and software integration). In particular you must have experience of Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) techniques.
• You must have experience in using ROS, CAD and 3D printing.
• You must have excellent interpersonal skills, work effectively in a team and have experience of preparing and delivering presentations, reports and journal papers to the highest levels of quality.
• As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
