The Advanced Materials Group within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham has world-leading expertise in the selection, manufacture and performance assessment of protective coatings for engineering components operating in aggressive environments. This is based on developing a sound understanding of the relationships between coating characteristics (e.g. composition and microstructure) and performance.

We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate/Fellow to work, as part of a team, on a research project in collaboration with Rolls-Royce under the supervision of Prof Philip Shipway. The focus of your research will be on microstructural and tribological characterisation of hardfacing alloys and coatings, assessment of their tribological performance and their degradation in aggressive high temperature (autoclave) aqueous environments. A range of test procedures will be employed it order to establish a holistic approach to understanding the properties and performance characteristics of new and replacement hardfacings/coatings for deployment in critical components within power generation systems.

Applicants must have  a good Honours degree in engineering or equivalent subject area. They must also hold (or be about to obtain) a PhD, or equivalent, in engineering or related physical science area (for example in materials science/engineering, mechanical engineering, a physical science or another relevant discipline). Excellent knowledge of, and practical skills in, microstructural characterisation and tribological testing of engineering materials are essential, as is experience in high pressure autoclave systems. The candidate must also possess excellent communication skills in English (both orally and in writing), suitable for the preparation of scientific reports and presentations to the industrial sponsor and papers for publication in high impact factor international journals and at international conferences.

The University of Nottingham is committed to providing competitive employment packages whilst supporting the well-being of our staff to help them reach their full potential. As a University employee, you will have access to the resources of the university as well as a range of benefits and rewards, including staff discounts and travel schemes and a highly attractive pension scheme.

The post is available from immediately and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 12 months. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours per week), however job share arrangements may be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof Phil Shipway, tel: +44 (0) 115 951 3760 or email Philip.shipway@nottingham.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
