Applications are invited for the above posts within the Rolls-Royce Manufacturing and On-Wing University Technology Centre ( ) in the Division of Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. The Department has an excellent international reputation for high quality theoretical and experimental research funded by EPSRC, DTI, EU and manufacturing industry. 

The person(s) appointed will be based in the area of robotics for challenging environments (i.e. continuum/soft robot), and will work on exciting research projects funded by EPSRC and Innovate UK. Specifically, this research will focus on continuum/soft robotics modelling and control algorithms of the robots for in-situ operations in constrained and hazardous environments. In this role, you will be at the forefront of research that offers significant technological challenges and innovations, with an aim on improving quality in robotics applications within nuclear and aerospace industry. As a result, this position offers the opportunity for close collaboration with industrial partners (e.g. Rolls-Royce). The opportunity to participate in some teaching activities is available for those wishing to pursue an academic career.

Candidates must possess a good knowledge of kinematic, static and dynamic analysis, control solutions related to robotics and demonstrate strong evidence of developing their own software (in MATLAB, ROS, C++ and/or LabVIEW) to control such systems. Previous expertise in developing customised robotics/ mechatronics (e.g. for manipulation/surveillance) would be preferable.

Apart from being capable to lead the research work on this project, good communication, presentation/reporting and publishing skills are required for the person appointed to effectively interact with the international academic and industrial partners involved in this demanding research project. In addition to carrying out project work, the researcher will benefit from exposure to internationally leading industrial companies that are interested in the results of this project and willing to collaborate on spin-put individual projects.

Candidates must possess a good first degree in mechanical, mechatronics engineering, control or robotics or related disciplines, and a PhD (or be close to completion) in robotics/mechatronics or related field of mechanical engineering.

This post is available immediately, but a late start could be agreed, and will offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of two years. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours per week), however job share arrangements may be considered.

It is a condition of this role that you undertake the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) screening.
