Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
Location: Boldrewood Campus
Salary: £30,395 to £37,345 Prer annum
Full Time Fixed Term for 2 years
Closing Date: Thursday 29 August 2019

Joining our EPSRC-funded project on transonic wing buffet you will contribute to computational research using direct numerical simulation and large-eddy simulations. Due to funding restrictions this is a 2-year position, with some flexibility on start date, but ideally starting October-December 2019.

You will be responsible for developing and applying advanced modal analysis tools (e.g. dynamic mode decomposition, global stability methods and resolvent mode analysis) to databases derived from direct numerical simulations (DNS) and large eddy simulations (LES). As well as analysing a large database of simulation results that has already been created, you will need to run additional DNS and LES cases as required, in particular to compare swept with unswept configurations. The simulations and analysis will provide physical insight into the buffet mechanism as well as other physical phenomena of interest such as acoustic waves, boundary-layer instabilities and shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions.

The project provides an opportunity to work on a fundamental problem of aerodynamics, with direct relevance to the aerospace industry and applying advanced data analysis techniques. As well as carrying our research to the highest standards, the successful applicant will be expected to work as part of a team and to prepare reports and presentations for project meetings and publications for international journals. They will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications/experience in Fluid Dynamics.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Neil Sandham n.sandham@soton.ac.uk and/or Dr Ati Sharma, a.sharma@soton.ac.uk, applications are only accepted via the online application process.

Interviews will take place during the week commencing 13th September 2019.

Application Procedure

You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
