  • Contribute to the research and development activities in the design of hermetic encapsulation, feedthroughs and lead wiring of a cortical implant for forecasting the occurrence of epileptic seizure
  • Opportunities to work collaboratively and collegially with the electronics design team based at Sherbrooke University in Canada and with the array development team based at the University of Melbourne
  • Deliver innovative research excellence through working with research teams and partnerships in the School of Engineering, Discipline of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, ECPs Advanced manufacturing and Fabrication, Advanced Materials, and Biomedical Health & Innovations
  • Reports directly to Associate Professor David Garrett, Electrical and Biomedical Engineering
  • Remuneration at Academic Level B1 $98,495 + 17% superannuation

About You & the Role

  • Perform high-impact research and development activities in implantable device engineering towards a human ready implant for use in 2023;
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals to generate external funding for the advancement of this project through targeting Category 1 outcomes;
  • Deliver impactful research outcomes and information that are relevant to the technical advancement of the project research area through publication of high-quality articles in high impact journal as lead or co-author;
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively with national and international researchers in contributing to high-quality research outcomes and developing new research initiatives, as well as communicating and effectively presenting your research and technology development findings and concepts through high quality papers/journal articles, delivery of seminars and conference attendance;
  • Contribute 10% of your time to mentor & supervise postgraduate by research students and participate in learning program activities appropriate to areas of expertise as well as administrative functions related to the research project.

You will have:

  • An emerging track record in publishing high-quality journal articles in highly ranked journals and conferences, and/or research project reports, in biomedical device development, particularly hermetic encapsulation, and feedthrough design;
  • Evidence of high-quality academic and/or industry-based research and technology development experience to experimentally test and characterise hermetic encapsulation;
  • High-level of focus, as well as strong organisational and analytical skills, equipped with effective problem-solving skills to identify ways to perform experimental procedures successfully within a team environment in collaboration with multidisciplinary researchers and/or other relevant stakeholders;
  • Passion and ability to build strong relationships across all levels of professional staff within the organisation, and strong technical report writing and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to communicate (both verbal and written) research concepts and knowledge through demonstrated high-quality technical reports and presentational skills;
  • Experience in co-supervising postgraduate by research students with ability to teach and/or mentor in the relevant areas of expertise.


Mandatory: PhD qualified or equivalent in a relevant Engineering i.e. Biomedical or Electronic Engineering or Applied Physical Science Discipline or in a closely related subject relevant to this research areas/projects.

Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children check.
