Research Fellow in Multiscale Flow and Mixing of Complex Multiphase Particle-Liquid Suspensions

Job Summary 

The post holder is expected to contribute to the achievement of the School’s research strategy by developing and undertaking new research activities on the subject of ‘particle-liquid flows’. 

The aim is to explore and study in detail the flow and mixing of two-phase particle-liquid suspensions experimentally and theoretically in mechanically agitated vessels. The project requires the development of experimental flow rigs and techniques, and the use of various instruments and methods to study particle-liquid flow behaviour and rheology in flow systems of varying geometries and scales. In particular, the research will make extensive use of the unique Lagrangian Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) technique pioneered at the University of Birmingham for 3D imaging of complex particle-liquid flows. The work will also involve the development of data analysis techniques and analytical or data-driven Lagrangian models to describe such complex flows.

This multi-institutional project is part of a large EPSRC-funded collaboration with academic partners at the University of Edinburgh and King’s College London:  

Continuous interaction with our academic partners will require conducting experiments, measurements and analyses to complement our partners’ work, and providing data and interpretations to validate numerical models and simulations. 

Main Duties

  • Plan, carry out and interpret experimental and theoretical work on particle-liquid flows and any related systems.
  • Critically analyse the data using a range of methods, develop new conceptual models and further develop the understanding of the science involved.
  • Develop new techniques and experimental procedures as appropriate. This will include utilising and developing novel techniques within the University of Birmingham in order to produce and characterise particle-liquid suspensions and related systems.
  • Set up and maintain in consultation with the Principal Investigator collaborations with the project’s academic partners to discuss and plan research strategy, design experiments and develop models and validate them.
  • Set up and maintain in consultation with the Principal Investigator collaborations with industrial partners to explore and develop new applications of the science/technology.
  • Present project’s findings and progress to the project consortium as required.

Person Specification

  • Have a strong first degree in Chemical Engineering or a relevant subject.
  • Have a PhD or be close to achieving a PhD or equivalent qualifications in a relevant research area.
  • A strong background in fluid mechanics and related subjects.
  • Strong background in advanced data analysis techniques.
  • Strong proven track record in a relevant research area.
  • Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and/or research methods and techniques relevant to the project’s area of research.
  • Good knowledge combined with substantial experience and aptitude in use of computer programming tools such as Matlab.
  • Have excellent communication skills both oral and written: ability to communicate complex information clearly, both orally and in writing.
