We are seeking a candidate for a two-year research position on disaster risk modelling and mitigation within the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, University of Adelaide, with a primary focus on long-term bushfire risk reduction. The role will primarily involve working with researchers and government departments and emergency management agencies across Australia to model the effectiveness of different long-term disaster risk reduction strategies. The primary focus of the work will be to co-develop and apply conceptual and quantitative approaches to assessing the effectiveness of different fuel management approaches in reducing long-term bushfire risk. However, the role will also involve the modelling of risks and effectiveness of mitigation strategies for other natural hazards.

To be successful at Level A you will need:

  • Hold a PhD in civil/environmental engineering, mathematics, disaster risk management, climate risk, biology/fire ecology or related discipline.
  • Strong analytical abilities, particularly in relation to data handling and processing, hazard and risk modelling, and spatial analysis using common software packages including ArcGIS and QGIS.
  • Ability to perform disaster risk and physical climate risk assessments (or experience in similar simulation-based analysis of complex environmental systems), ideally in relation to bushfire and at a range of scales (e.g. local, regional).
  • Ability to engage and interact with industry, including Government departments, and researchers and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have current working rights to work in Australia.

In addition to the above, to be successful at Level B you will need:

  • Ability to independently deliver research and consulting projects for a range of clients.
  • Experience in proposal development and engagement with clients and potential clients in developing new consulting and research projects.
  • Contract and project management experience with understanding of IP and contractor management.
