The Opportunity

UNSW Built Environment (BE) is one of the largest built environment faculties in Australia and is internationally renowned for its comprehensive range of degree programs. A Level C Academic is expected to have a sound track record in research leadership with outcomes of high quality and high international impact,  clear evidence of the desire and ability to continue to achieve research excellence and deliver research leadership. They will also  have outstanding delivery of high-quality teaching and student experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and,  the ability to develop innovative teaching methods, and evidence of supervision of PhD students as well as Honours & Masters Projects. 

A Level D Academic will have an outstanding record of success in obtaining competitive research funding,  and participate in collaborative research projects. Have the capacity to continue productive research at an international level & strong publication record in top peer-reviewed journals. You will possess excellent leadership skills, including competence in modelling behaviours that align with the University’s values and the ability to foster these in staff, students and the broader University community


  • Salary: Level C $130,216 - $149, 394 + 17% superannuation & Annual Leave loading
  • Salary: Level D $155,785-$171129 + 17% superannuation & Annual Leave loading
  • Full time-Continuing - 35hr/per week 
  • Location: Kensington Campus – Sydney, Australia


Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Conduct planning research of high quality and high international impact
  • Attain competitive government and industry research funding and publication of outcomes in high quality research outlets
  • Play a significant role in the leadership of research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team
  • Deliver high quality teaching and student experience utilising sound pedagogical methodologies and innovative technologies and from time to time, deliver teaching across disciplines
  • High quality supervision of postgraduate research projects
  • Provide consultation and feedback to students, regarding assessments including marking assignments, mid-session and final examinations
  • Contribute to undergraduate teaching within the Faculty and School, including participation in the development, delivery, assessment and administration of courses and programs
  • Develop new course material and flexible approaches to teaching and learning for the City Planning Discipline
  • Mentor academics and/or HDR students in their development of successful research careers
  • Provide leadership in developing significant productive relationships and engagement with industry and the community, attract significant industry funding and participate in professional activities
  • Work collaboratively with peers across the Faculty and UNSW in all aspects of academic endeavour and contribute to mentoring of other staff
  • High level contribution to leadership in the Planning discipline, broad administrative functions in the School and/or University, course coordination, attending program and/or faculty meetings, involvement in Open days and recruitment activities and play a major role in planning and/or committee work or other duties as requested by the Director of City Planning and/or the Head of School
  • Ensure hazards and risks are identified and controlled for tasks, projects and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility
