BMA-19 Senior Researcher – Low Carbon Heating and Cooling

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The International Energy Research Centre (IERC), hosted at Tyndall National Institute (TNI) is recruiting for the role of Senior Researcher – Low Carbon Heating and Cooling. The post-holder must understand the latest trends in heating and cooling research, the associated energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, and relevant policies and regulations.

The International Energy Research Centre (IERC) core research team is a multi-disciplinary, collaborative research group, who conduct specific pieces of research to meet the needs of industry and as approved by the IERC Steering Committee. The appointee will be a leading member of the core research team reporting to the Head of Research who reports to the IERC Executive Director.


Key Responsibilities

To lead the IERC's work on low carbon heating and cooling research while providing vision and direction for renewable heating and cooling research at the IERC
To lead in the specification and delivery of research and analytical projects that can deliver transformative innovations into the heating and cooling sector
To monitor, analyse and forecast developments in national and international research and innovations, and collaborate with IERC partner organisations in the analysis of the innovation needs for the heating and cooling sector

To engage and collaborate with industry (national and international) partners
To generate new funding streams and build the team's expertise and capability to deliver fully collaborative projects in this critical area
To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day to day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor
Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
Essential Criteria

A PhD in engineering, physics, or equivalent research experience
At least 8 years' experience in energy systems research as appropriate to the post
Experience with techno-economic modelling of the heat sector
Proven track record in writing successful competitively won research proposals leading to income generation
Evidence of close working with industry, and demonstrating an understanding of industry needs
Evidence of esteem and standing in the heating and cooling in the energy end-use research community (academic output such as peer reviewed publications and publications )
Desirable Criteria

Demonstrated experience in holistic energy system analysis, including non-technical issues
Strong preference for a primary degree/masters in thermo-mechanical engineering
A proven track record to win external funding (>€1M) highly desirable
Experience of responding to government or other institutional consultations
Highly self-motivated and able to demonstrate initiative
Excellent communication, organisation and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated capability of working within and leading a project team to achieve results
This is a full-time, specified purpose position with the IERC, starting at appointment and aligned with available funding. The IERC is an equal opportunity employer supporting a collaborative and creative working environment.

This position may be appointed on the Grade 6A scale in the range €58,799- €74,228. All appointments will be made at the first point on the scale.
