Role Description

The Department of Electronic Engineering is seeking to appoint an Associate Lecturer to provide teaching support for our suite of degree programmes in the areas of Mathematics and Signal Processing.


We welcome applications from candidates with expertise in engineering, mathematics and/or signal processing.


You will deliver lectures, lead laboratories, tutorials and other forms of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, investigating, developing and applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material that bring new insights to the Department and create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students. You will be responsible for assessing work, and will also undertake other teaching related duties such as supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students, student projects and appropriate departmental administrative duties. You will also carry out on-going curriculum review, including module content and materials and contribute to the development of teaching and learning strategies.


Key requirements for the post are:

  • PhD in mathematics or an engineering discipline or equivalent experience;
  • Appropriate academic professional and teaching qualification or a willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice;
  • Detailed knowledge in engineering mathematics sufficient to develop teaching and provide relevant learning support to students across different levels of academic ability;
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching techniques and methodologies;
  • Ability to manage and deliver own teaching;
  • Excellent communication skills.


The role requires you to:

  • Have experience in teaching and learning in HE at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level or in an evidenced similar context;
  • Demonstrate creativity, initiative and judgement in applying appropriate approaches to teaching and learning support;
  • Teach at any level within the area of expertise, present specialist material in a logical, coherent and interesting manner;
  • Use different delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students;
  • Undertake, effectively, a range of administrative responsibilities.


This is a full time position (37 hours per week) and the salary will be within the range of £32,236 - £39,609 per annum on Grade 6 of the University of York’s salary scales.
