Postdoc in HTL biocrude upgrading (P21751)
At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a position as Postdoc in HTL biocrude upgrading is open for appointment from 1 March 2018 or soon thereafter. The position is available for a period of 2 years. The Department of Energy Technology is an expanding department covering most fields of Energy Technology, ranging from electrical energy (Power Systems, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines) to thermal energy including Energy Systems and Thermofluids but also mechatronic systems. The department has about 250 employees – of these, more than 100 are Ph.D. students. State of the art laboratory facilities are available across the fields of research. The Department has a strong focus on collaborative research; as a consequence, there is extensive collaboration with other research and higher education institutions as well as industry. Aalborg University has recently been ranked the number 1 engineering university in Europe, number 8 in the world, by the US World News and Report Best Global Universities list.
Job description
The position is offered in relation to the research program "Biomass" and the Postdoc will be part of the section for Thermofluids.
The 4REFINERY project (https://ec.europa.eu/inea/en/horizon-2020/projects/H2020-Energy/Biofuels/4REFINERY), grant agreement number 727531, will develop and demonstrate the production of next generation biofuels from more efficient primary liquefaction routes integrated with upgraded downstream (hydro)refining processes to achieve overall carbon yields of >45%. The consortium will aim for successful deployment into existing refineries, including delivering a comprehensive toolbox for interfacing with existing refinery models.
The project is focused on the transformation of bio-liquids from fast pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction into advanced biofuels, through intermediate process steps combined with downstream co-processing technologies. The goal is to bring these technologies from TRL3-4 to TRL4-5. The project will establish relations between product’s properties, the quality of renewable feedstocks and all relevant process parameters along the value chain. The study of these combinations will allow a full understanding of the influence of feedstock and treatment processes on product characteristics.
Within the framework of this project, a 2 year Postdoc position at Aalborg University is offered.
The research focus will be within catalytic hydrotreating and upgrading of HTL biocrudes derived from lignocellulosic biomass to transport fuels, specifically on establishing refinery entry points and pathways for bioderived liquids. Although the focus is on the upgrading part of the value chain, the postdoc will be involved in fundamental HTL operations, both lab and pilot scale, to produce raw HTL biocrudes as well. A large part of the work will be experimental, utilizing state-of-the-art facilities available at the department, in particular batch and continuous hydrotreating facilities.
Candidates to the position should be able to document a strong background in chemical engineering, supplemented by documented experience or knowledge in one or more of the fields of catalysis, process engineering, biomass liquefaction, refinery processes, oil and gas technology, experimental design and lab work, process modelling.
As the position is part of a larger international project, strong command of the English language, both spoken and written, is a prerequisite and should be documented. Candidates should document any prior experience in multi-partner projects.
