The project will be part of a collaboration between the School of Engineering and the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. You will receive comprehensive multi-disciplinary training and have access to one of the most comprehensive Additive Manufacturing (3D-Printing) laboratory facilities in the world and a state-of-the-art Nanoscale & Microscale Research Centre. Project title:


3D Printing with 1D Functional Nanomaterials


Project description:


This project aims to revolutionise the ways we make functional materials by combining innovative manufacturing techniques with nanoscale materials design. To achieve this, you will synthesise a range of nanomaterials using carbon nanotubes and nanofibers as 1D templates to achieve desired electronic, optical or catalytic properties, by applying the methods developed in in the School of Chemistry (www.nottingham.ac.uk/nanocarbon). You will integrate the functional nanomaterials into polymer composites with programmed mechanical properties, shape and composition, by utilising powder bed fusion techniques developed for novel polymer nanocomposite powder (e.g. by laser sintering; www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/cfam/). The presence of functional 1D nanostructures within the 3D printed material are expected to bring new effects and functional properties that can be exploited in practical applications, and you will test mechanical, structural and functional properties of these materials using advanced characterisation methods.


The project will be supervised by Dr Ruth Goodridge (Engineering), Prof Andrei Khlobystov (Chemistry) and Prof Ian Ashcroft (Engineering).


Requirements of the studentships:


•    Due to funding restrictions, the position is only available for UK or EU candidates.


    Candidates must possess or expect to obtain, a 2:1 degree in Engineering or Science related discipline. The project is particularly suitable for candidates with a Materials or Chemistry background who would like to continue developing their materials chemistry skills while expanding to real applications through learning advanced manufacturing methods.
