Applications are invited for the position of a university professor for


Rock Mechanics and Tunnelling


at the Institute of Rock Mechanics and Tunnelling of the Civil Engineering Faculty of Graz University of Technology. It is planned to fill this position pursuant to Sec. 98 Austrian University Act 2002 as from October 1st2018; the position will be based on a permanent employment contract as defined under the terms of Austrian civil-law with Graz University of Technology.


The successful candidate is expected to show commitment in representing the subject areas of rock mechanics and tunnelling in research and teaching; the candidate will pro-actively contribute to scientific research achievement in these fields, initiate and implement projects of fundamental research and applied research, continue the management of the rock mechanics laboratory and further expand this laboratory. We expect close cooperation with the other departments and research centres of Graz University of Technologythat have a comparable academic and research focus, interdisciplinary cooperation (e.g. in the respective fields of expertise) and readiness for inter-university cooperation (as in the “NAWI Graz Geosciences” network with Graz University).


The research activities will include both national and internationally funded projects of fundamental and applied research to be carried out in close cooperation with other scientific institutions and industry.


The successful candidate will hold classes/courses in rock mechanics and tunnelling in German and English and be responsible for students of the Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences Bachelor programme, for master programme students of Geotechnical and Hydraulic Engineering, for students of the “NATM Engineer” university course in cooperation with MontanuniversitaetLeobenand/or master programme as well as for PhD students of Civil Engineering.


Your profile:

a)      PhD level university studies in Austria or abroad in the disciplines that are of relevance for the position;

b)      Relevant qualification for teaching at institutions of higher education;

c)       Publications in international, peer-reviewed specialist journals in the field of rock mechanics and tunnelling;

d)      Practical experience – preferably on an international level – in rock mechanics and tunnelling;

e)      Teaching experience with proven instruction capabilities;

f)        Experience in obtaining research funds;

g)      Leadership skills;

h)      Excellent command of German (or obtain) and English
