We have an open position for a postdoctoral researcher in the Arctic Marine and Ice Technology research group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Central part of our research is numerical modeling of sea ice failure processes. The group has developed an in-house code based on the finite-discrete element method (FEM-DEM). This code is continuously expanded and adapted to the study of sea ice failure processes against fixed structures and the formation, deformation and strength of ice ridges and ice rubble piles.


We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our group for a study on the breakage and fragmentation of ice blocks. These phenomena occur under compressive loads in block-to-block contacts. This will be the first systematic study on the ice block breakage and fragmentation under such conditions. The fragmentation process is complicated and requires the use of novel experiments and numerical models, and in this research, you will be working on both. The unique experiments on this topic will be performed in the cold room of the department. Numerical modelling must be done on different scales, which reach from high resolution modeling to simplified contact models. We will use our in-house FEM-DEM code as the basis of the modeling. We aim for new understanding on ice mechanics, to unique numerical models for block breakage.


Even if the direct applications of this research are related to sea ice, results should have implications on other fields that include material fragmentation. Ice mechanics related applications of our research are in behavior of ships and structures in ice, and on the safety of maritime winter transportation.




The call is open for candidates with a Doctor’s degree in a range of backgrounds. Deep understanding of solid and computational mechanics (and related computational tools) is required. A suitable background may come from applied or computational mechanics, mechanical engineering, marine engineering, civil engineering, engineering physics, or related disciplines. Background including both, computational and experimental research, is favorable.




The position is at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The expected duration is two years, but a contract is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to advance of research. The salary is according to the salary system of Aalto University.
