INL is seeking a highly qualified, self-motivated experienced researcher to develop and optimise hybrid technology devices for sensing related applications.


Job Requirements and Key Responsibilities

The candidate is expected to participate actively in the research tasks of project Nano4Sense (Nanotech Enabled Autonomous Sensing Systems) related with the development of sensing devices which rely on the homogeneous integration of more than one technology with capabilities that exceed those available for each isolated technology.  The candidate should be able to take all the steps required for the production of devices that integrate MEMS, Spintronics, Photonics, Microfluidics and possibly other technologies using standard CMOS compatible top-down microfabrication and nanofabrication processes (Physical Vapor Deposition, Chemical Vapor Deposition, Reactive Ion Etching, Ion Milling, Optical Lithography, E-beam Lithography, etc.). The candidate should have a strong cleanroom background experience, but should also be capable of assembling and automating setups required for the characterisation and benchmarking of the devices produced.  Examples of such hybrid sensing devices include, but are not limited to, the following:  MEMS accelerometers using magnetic sensors, sub-micron resolved magnetic imaging scanning platforms, and ultra-sensitive magnetic detectors enhanced by MEMS devices.


Desired Skills and Experience

-PhD Physics, Physical Engineering, Materials Science or other relevant subject is required;

-Over 4 years of active research after PhD. Candidates with less than 4 years of active research after PhD may be considered if their profile and scientific record clearly match the required profile and scientific background;

-Previous hand-on experience in the micro and/or nano-fabrication of devices using at least one of the following technologies: MEMS, Spintronics or thin-film photonics;

Candidates with additional know-how on electronics and hands-on experience with CMOS design will be preferred;

-Previous participation in collaborative international research projects is valued;

-Programming skills required to automate experiments is required (Labview, Matlab, Visual Studio, others…);

-Experience with CAD design tools to layout setups involving mechanical components is valued;

-A track record of high quality publications demonstrating the ability to independently conduct cutting-edge collaborative research is required;

-Previous participation in collaborative international research projects is valued;

-Applicants are also expected to have high quality publications in international journals and to be competitive in obtaining external research funding;

-Applicants with international mobility experience will be highly evaluated.

English is the working language of INL. Therefore, excellent communication skills in English are required.
