Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The department carries out research and offers study programs in Offshore Technology, Marine and Subsea Technology, Industrial Asset Management, Structural Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The department has a high international profile with students and staff from around the world. There are currently 60 employees including research fellows and postdocs, and 660 students at the department.


Professor in Mechanical Engineering / Subsea Technology

The University of Stavanger seeks to fill a position as Professor in Mechanical Engineering / Subsea Technology at Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science. The position is to commence by 2017.10.01


The position is within Mechanical Engineering/Subsea Technology. Competence is preferred within mechanical-, hydraulic – and material technology applied in subsea production systems and associated systems applied for drilling, completion, installation and intervention. It could also be relevant with competence within automatization, marine control and cybernetics.


The responsibilities comprise research, supervision, teaching, student assessment and administration related to the field above. The appointee will be responsible for the course OFF 550 Subsea production Systems. The appointee must be able to document extensive academic qualifications within central areas of the academic field and, through her/his work, to have demonstrated scientific competence within one or more areas of the discipline. The ability to initiate and direct research and development projects will have high priority. Qualifications within the areas of creativity, innovation, commercialization of research and relevant industry experience is regarded as prime advantages.


The appointee must also be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills related to higher education, or accept to enter a university teaching courses within a period of two years from commencement. The application should include a reflection on teaching skills. Use of varied teaching methods is a priority at the university. The appointee must be prepared to adopt different methods and different digital learning resources. Professor will the first year participate in “NyTi” which is the universities guidance and integration program for new teachers.


The language of instruction is normally English. The appointee must have a good command of oral and written Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, or acquire such language competence within a period of two years. The appointee must also be prepared to teach classes in Norwegian.


If there are no fully qualified applicants, temporary employment may be offered for a period of three years with a view to acquiring full qualifications and tenure. The applicant must be judged to have the necessary abilities to acquire such qualifications within this period.


The position of professor is salaried according to the State Salary Code, 17.510, code 1013, ltr 72 - 80, of NOK 648.100 - 790 100 per annum. In special cases higher salaries may apply.


The position provides for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favorable retirement benefits. Members may also apply for home investment loans at favorable interest rates.

Appointment applies to the entire university. Presently the position is organized under the Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science, Faculty of Science and Technology at University of Stavanger in Stavanger, Norway


The academic field for the position is within Mechanical Engineering/Subsea Technology with focus on mechanical-, hydraulic – and material technology applied in subsea production systems and associated systems applied for drilling, completion, installation and intervention and similar systems related to potential future new ocean industry activities.


Key areas that qualify for the position are hydraulics as applied in subsea control systems, hydrostatics and high pressure vessels, valve technology and activities related to heavy underwater operations. Competence within automatization, marine control and cybernetics will also be relevant. It is expected that subsea technology will play a key role in the development of future sustainable industry activities in the ocean space where remote control of mechanical systems on and above the seabed will be of increasing importance.


The appointee is expected to strengthen research at the UiS and IRIS through initiation and management of research programs in addition to individual research and teaching within her/his academic discipline(s). The appointee will conduct courses, supervise students and participate in student assessment at all levels within the field for the position, in addition to assuming administrative duties.


The appointee shall have special responsibility for the course OFF 550 Subsea Production Systems. It is required that the appointee shall develop and maintain a mutually fruitful cooperation with relevant industry including oil companies and supplier companies.


The appointee is expected to support and participate in the other activities at the faculty and to accept responsibility for interdepartmental programs or projects.


The University emphasizes excellence in teaching quality and requires that teaching staff have educational and didactic expertise in higher education. Pedagogical competence can be documented with diploma / certificate from relevant formal educational training related to higher education. Didactic competence can be documented with varied didactic work in higher education. Regulations for assessment of teaching skills are available from the Faculty.


Applicants will be evaluated by an expert committee on the basis of submitted material. The committee will particularly consider the applicants' submitted scholarly and scientific work and teaching skills. Experience from popularization, journalism, university politics and administration and other relevant and documented qualifications for the position can also be considered.
