The Université catholique de Louvain invites applications for a tenure track or tenured full time position in urbanism, sustainable planning, and territorial management and development


UCL is a comprehensive university offering, in the context of the present position, the opportunity of cross-disciplinary research collaborations with the architects, architectural engineers, civil engineers and with the other members of the university community interested by the various dimensions of urban and territorial management, development, and planning. 

The LOCI Faculty organises teaching to train architects, urbanists and engineer-architects. It has a national and international reputation in the domains of architectural theory and design, urban design and planning.


The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching (theoretical and methodological lectures, seminars and design studios linked with theoretical lectures) in the above-mentioned field, within the specialised level of urbanism and planning, but also potentially in the various other degree programmes organised by the Faculty on Louvain-la-Neuve, Brussels and Tournai campuses.

He or she will have the pedagogical experience necessary to direct a design studio at the urban, territorial or landscape scale.


The successful candidate will carry on academic research in urbanism, sustainable planning, and territorial management and development, taking into account economic, social and environmental dimensions of territories and their specific dynamics.

The successful candidate will conduct research in a interdisciplinary context, in order to develop an ecosytemic view of inhabited spaces and their use. His or her research will emphasize theoretical, methodological and technical dimensions of spatial composition, articulation and design through built and unbuilt projects at various scales. He or she will focus on issues at stake in town planning and public space design.

He or she will have professional experience as a designer in the broad area urbanism and land planning, either as a member of a private firm or as a public servant in an agency with territorial responsibilities.

Other condition

The applicant must have a Master’s degree in Architecture or Architectural Engineering or equivalent and a PhD degree in Urban Design, Regional Planning or equivalent.

Tasks : 

the applicant will

- be responsible for teaching courses at all study levels (i.e. undergraduate and postgraduate), as well as in programmes of continuing education;

Qualifications : 

the applicant must have

- a Ph.D. degree in Urban design, regional planning, or any related discipline;
- significant scientific record with international publications;
- either studied abroad for an extensive period or have had substantial experience outside UCL;
- experience in and the aptitude for teaching at University level;
- capacity to work within a team of teachers and to integrate research findings into teaching;
- creativity and must be open to teaching innovation and interdisciplinarity;
- capacities required to undertake high-level academic research: capacity to raise research fundings, to supervise projects, to animate and lead a research team;;
- good knowledge of both spoken and written French and English. If this is not the case, the applicant accept to learn French and/or English in order to be able to teach in French and English within 2 years. Fluency in other languages is an asset.
