Institute of Theoretical Electrical Engineering

Our profile

The Institute for Theoretical Electrical Engineering is researching the simulation of semiconductor devices, which form the basis for all electronic devices from smartphones via photovoltaic and high-speed data transmission to power electronics for electric mobility. We develop simulation programs for the detailed description of physical processes within these devices. In addition, the charge carrier transport in novel semiconductor devices is investigated and optimized.

your profile

You have a university degree (Master or equivalent) in electrical engineering or physics with excellent results. They are interested in semiconductor physics, numerics and high performance computing. Since you will work in an international team, good English skills are required.

Your tasks

They will work on the simulation of extremely fast heterojunction bipolar transistors based on III-V semiconductors used in high-frequency applications (near field radar, THz waves, high-speed communication, etc.). The work is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Electron transport is modeled at the microscopic level taking into account thermal effects (ie self-heating). First, an existing simulator for silicon needs to be extended for applicability to III-V semiconductors, then different strong approximations for heat transfer will be investigated. An important aspect of the project is the development of numerically stable algorithms. The finished program will be used to
