Position Details


The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) at the University of Washington invites applications for one full time (100% FTE) Lecturer/Senior Lecturer position. The person filling this position will be responsible for leading the Engineering Communication Program (ECP) in the College of Engineering (CoE) at the University of Washington (UW).


The position requires a PhD or Master’s degree or significant work and/or teaching experience in Technical Communication, Technical Writing, Human Centered Design & Engineering, English, or related field or significant work and/or teaching experience in this area. Preference will be given to candidates with a passion for and demonstrated excellence in teaching writing in engineering disciplines. The position includes responsibilities for developing and managing CoE technical writing courses to support students at multiple levels (2nd year, 3rd year, graduate, etc.); hiring and supervising lecturers to teach in the ECP; teaching courses in ECP; staying current with knowledge of technical writing pedagogy and writing across the curriculum. The ideal candidate should have a strong record in teaching technical writing in engineering disciplines, demonstrated excellence in curriculum development, and experience supervising or coordinating others. An ability to understand technical concepts, talk with a wide range of experts, and a demonstrated interest in keeping track of developments in engineering practice, including engineering ethics and sustainable engineering, will help in the development of new curricula. Experience with ELL and international students is a plus.


We anticipate an initial 2-3 year appointment duration. The position can be renewed and the individual in this position is reviewed at the end of each appointment period for reappointment consideration. This position is a 9-month academic year appointment as a voting member of the HCDE faculty. The appointment will begin as soon as March 2018. The level of appointment, initial appointment duration, and compensation will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications.


UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. While Lecturers at the UW are primarily evaluated with regard to their teaching and service, the successful candidate will be invited to participate in the wide-range of research activities in the department and collaboratively across the college and university. The successful candidate will join a vibrant faculty conducting interdisciplinary research in human-computer interaction and the design of sociotechnical systems. Current faculty work in infrastructure studies, human-computer interaction, research through design, health and behavior change, visualization, computer-supported cooperative work, crowd-sourcing, computer-mediated communication, ICTD, engineering design, scientific collaboration, emerging communication technologies, human centered data science, visual analytics, and engineering education. The department is the home of dynamic, collaborative faculty labs, and faculty members regularly collaborate with colleagues in Computer Science and Engineering, the Information School, and the School of Art. Faculty members also routinely engage in research projects with affiliates from the region’s noted high-tech industry. Seattle is home to many prominent technology companies, along with a robust startup and global health community.
