Head of Department at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Production (IV-202/17)
Faculty of Engineering(IV) has about 1300 employees and 7000 students, and is one of NTNU's largest faculties. The faculty consists of eight institutes in Trondheim, Ålesund and Gjøvik. The institutes are a major contributor to bachelor, civil engineering and doctorate education in Norway and contribute with current knowledge production nationally and internationally. International excellence is to be reflected in our education and research.


About the position Head of Department is the unit's daily manager. The person concerned shall ensure that the activities are conducted within the framework laid down in regulations, overall level decisions and have general power of attorney to settle ongoing matters. The head of department reports to his dean. Head of department is part of the Dean's management team.


Head of department's most important tasks are to:

  • Lead and develop the business of the device with focus on core tasks
  • participate in the institution's strategic work and ensure that the unit has updated strategies and that they are followed up
  • Ensure good academic management with emphasis on quality in teaching and research
  • provide appropriate technical-administrative services and efficient operation of the institute
  • represent and position the institute and promote internal and external cooperation
  • provide the conditions for the students' learning and working environment
  • create a positive organizational culture and stimulate a productive and good working environment for students and employees
  • represent the employer, ensure that employees are consulted and ensure the organization's participation

Applicants to the Head of Department must have:

  • Good leadership skills, usually with managerial experience from universities, college or research institutions as the center el
  • ability to set goals and work strategically
  • personal suitability

In addition, much emphasis will be placed on:


  • documented scientific competence at first level within one of the department's disciplines
  • Good understanding of management of knowledge workers in a context of academic freedom
  • motivational and inclusive leadership style characterized by collaboration, participation and dialogue
  • good communication skills and ability to build networks and create trust internally and externally
  • leadership behavior that stimulates good results, good and healthy work environment among employees and students

Salary conditions etc. The
position is paid in code 1475, head of department. The person who is added will normally be paid from gross NOK 750 000, - to NOK 900 000, - per person. year depending on qualifications. From the salary, 2% of statutory deposits are deducted from the National Pension Fund.
