About INL
The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory - INL (http://www.inl.int), is founded under an international legal framework to perform interdisciplinary research and to deploy and articulate nanotechnology for the benefit of society. INL aims to become the world-wide hub for nanotechnology deployment addressing society’s grand challenges with specific emphasis on Aging & Wellbeing, Mobility & Urban Living and a Safe & Secure Society.

The work undertaken by INL will have a significant impact on people’s lives as well as notably contribute to the development of the society at large. INL recruits from all over the world and the objective of our recruitment process is to ensure that staff are employed on the basis of skills and requirements for the job and that there are mutually beneficially relationships between INL’s expectations and the staff personal and professional career development. We value the diversity and multiculturalism of our teams. Further, our family friendly working practices and benefits are a great asset and an essential element in cultivating an attractive and inspiring workplace.

About the Project
INL is seeking a highly qualified, self-motivated person with a MSc degree in Physics or Chemistry, with emphasis in Nanoscience, and a background in Nanoelectronics and experience Computational Material Science, to carry out research within the ‘SR&TD’ PROJECT Large area two dimensional heterostructures for photodetectors PTDC/FIS-NAN/3668/2014led by Dr.Ricardo Ribeiro (U. Minho).

Department of QMST – Quantum Materials, Science and Technology
The Department of QMST works towards the understanding of both materials and energy exchange processes at the nano-scale, where the laws of nature are governed by quantum mechanics. Activities include experimental and theoretical research and development of 2D materials (e.g. graphene, transition metal di-chalcogenides, boron nitride, etc.), fabrication of devices based on 2D materials (e.g. biosensors and photodetectors), photovoltaic materials for advanced thin film solar cells (e.g. Cu(In,Ga)Se2, etc.), materials for solar-to-hydrogen conversion and batteries and research on atomic scale electronics.

Requirements and Key Responsibilities
The project aims to explore the optical properties of 2D materials, in particular, transition metal dichalcogenides. The work will encompass computational modelling of the optical properties of these materials by means of exact diagonalization calculations to describe excitons, using as starting point a tight-binding model derived from DFT.

Eligibility conditions, required qualifications and expertise Candidates must comply with the following requirements:
- Hold a Master Degree in the field of (Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nanoscience or related topic);
- Be either (i) a European Union Citizen or (ii) a non-European Union Citizen residing permanently in Portugal;
