Subject Description Design 
of electronic design, especially design of integrated circuits for radio frequency applications. 



A tasks


The research focuses on integrated circuit design, focusing on receivers for systems using massive MIMO technology. This technology is believed to be of great importance in increasing the capacity of next generation mobile system, 5G. The base stations will then use hundreds of antennas to direct the signal to the different users. However, many technical challenges must be resolved before to provide cost-effective circuitry with low power consumption. The doctoral student will investigate how integrated circuits (chips) can be constructed in CMOS technology to handle the different antenna signals, and how the information can be sent to / from the other parts of the system.



Circuit design, as well as measurement of manufactured integrated circuits, are important parts of the work. Circuits that will be constructed include receivers, as well as various building blocks such as amplifiers, mixers and oscillators. 



The main task of a doctoral student is to undertake his research education, which includes participation in research projects as well as postgraduate courses. The duties also include participation in teaching and other institutional work, but up to 20% of the working hours. 



Eligibility Basic eligibility for education at the postgraduate level has the one who has 

  • graduated at advanced level or
  • Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, with content relevant to postgraduate education or
  • in some other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

 

The requirements for special eligibility for the postgraduate subject electronics meet the requirements of:

  • At least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level relevant to the subject area, or
  • Master of Science in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information and Communication Technology, Medicine and Engineering, Technical Physics, Technical Mathematics or Technical Nanoscience.

 

Other requirements:

  • Very good knowledge of English, in spoken and written terms.
  • Focus on the construction of analogue and radio frequency integrated circuits.

 

Assessment criteria


Selection of postgraduate education takes place according to the ability to apply for postgraduate studies. The assessment of the ability is primarily based on the study results at the first level and the advanced level. The following are taken into account:

  • Knowledge and skills relevant to dissertation and subject matter.
  • Assessed ability for independent work and ability to formulate and attack scientific problems.
  • Ability for written and oral communication.
  • Other experience relevant to the education at the research level, eg professional experience.

 

Other qualifications:

  • Courses and degrees in the design of integrated circuits, radio electronics, and wireless systems.
  • Professional experience in the design of integrated circuits for radio frequency applications.
  • Experience of CAD systems for integrated circuits.
  • Experience of radio frequency measurements.

 

Consideration will also be given to good co-operative ability, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his experience and competence , is expected to have the ability needed to complete postgraduate education. 



Terms


Only the person who is admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. Postgraduate studies are four years in full-time studies. In the course of teaching and other institutional work, the employment is extended to a minimum, but not more than 5 years (ie max 20%). Provisions for employment as a PhD student are in the Higher Education Ordinance (1998: 80).
